After immersing the wallet in cold water for the appropriate length of time, the crystals contained within the panels of the wallet will absorb the water and expand into a gel. Once the crystals turn into a gel like substance does the evaporation process begins. This occurs when air reacts with the gel creating the cooling effect. When your Frio® wallet is activated, it is vital that the wallet be in constant contact with air to enable the evaporation process and must not be placed in any air tight container or bag. Remember: as water is evaporating it is cooling! HOW LONG WILL IT REMAIN COOL? Used properly, once your Frio® wallet has been immersed in water for the proper amount of time and is exposed to air, they will have the ability to keep insulin cool for a minimum of 45 hours (Based on a constant environmental temperature of 100°F. WHAT IS THE AVERAGE LIFE SPAN OF A FRIO®? Again, used and stored properly, the wallet can last anywhere from 12-24 months depending on how well it is cared for. In some cases the wallet has lasted much longer! As long as the crystals expand to a gel when immersed in water, the wallets will keep medication cool. As wallets age they will take longer to activate. CAN I CLEAN MY FRIO®? The outer Cambrelle cover of the wallet can be washed in warm water using a very mild detergent. The inner wallet can be spot cleaned by using a soft bristle brush (i.e.: soft toothbrush or nail brush) and only dipping the brush into slightly soapy water (do not immerse the entire wallet and do not apply soap directly to your Frio®), then you can spot clean the dry wallet with your brush. You can then rinse the wallet under running water without damaging the crystals inside. DO NOT PLACE YOUR FRIO® INTO A WASHING MACHINE! WHAT TEMPERATURE DOES A FRIO® WALLET MAINTAIN? We hate to sound redundant here, but used properly an activated Frio® wallet will have an internal temperature between 60°F-72°F, depending on the climate which the wallet is exposed to. CAN THE WALLET BE USED FOR OTHER MEDICATIONS? Yes, Frio® wallets can hold other medications. Epi-Pen (epinephrine) manufacturer state that their pens do not require refrigeration, but must remain in the temperature range of 59°F-86°F. It is imperative that you contact your Doctor or the manufacturer of the drug you would like to carry in a Frio® to ensure that it will be at the correct storage temperature inside a Frio® wallet as further tests other than insulin have not been undertaken at this stage. MY FRIO® IS STILL SWOLLEN AFTER 1-2 WEEKS.... The good news is that your medication remains cool without re-soaking. The bad news is that it may take a week or two to completely dry out your Frio® after use. The hotter the climate, the quicker the evaporation process. For example: if the wallet is exposed to a constant environmental temperature of 100°F with extremely low or non-existent humidity, it would most likely dry out completely after 45 hours. Based on that statement, if the environmental temperatures are less, the wallet will stay active (cool) for a much longer period. MY FRIO® FEELS STICKY OR I CAN'T GET ANYTHING INTO MY WALLET.... This is not a defect. If your wallet feels 'sticky', this simply means that at some stage the wallet was over-soaked causing the gel to force its way through the fabric. The fix for this is to completely dry your Frio® (back to the hard crystals stage) and pinch off the excess gel bits. Caution is required doing this - do not pinch off more than one area of the wallet using the same section of your cloth/towel as this will just redeposit the dried gel further. The crystals are capable of absorbing 500 times their volume of water, therefore time restrictions are critical to follow or your Frio® wallet will most likely swell to a point of uselessness. Should this occur you will need to dry your Frio® until the items needed to be inserted will fit. Patience is needed for this. Some drying suggestions would be putting the wallet on a low temperature heat vent or window sill; turning and shaking regularly to prevent the crystals from congealing together. DO NOT PUT INTO A CLOTHES DRYER! MY FRIO® DOES NOT SWELL AS IT USED TO..... As your Frio® wallet ages it will take longer for the crystals in the panels to absorb water. Nylon liners are required to protect electronics in insulin pens (i.e. Lantus™ OptiClik® Pen, Lilly™ HumaPen Memoir®etc.) as they contain batteries as well as LCD screens that must be protected from any condensation that may transmit from an activated wallet. If you have an insulin delivery device that has electronics - please purchase a liner! If you do not have to protect electronics it is not required as after your Frio® has been soaked in water and towel dried, it is dry to the touch!! We will gladly accept Frio® products for return or exchange as long as the wallets have not been activated by water or any other liquid!!
